Outdoor fountain paint fading or peeling: what should you do?

Why can painted fiberglass resin products fade or lose paint outdoors, and how can they be repaired?

These products have a spray-painted finish. Sunlight, moisture and temperature changes can affect coating durability over time, causing weathering or colour changes. The result depends on the coating system and actual conditions of use.

Distinguish fading from peeling

Fading and coating detachment require different responses. Peeling may also involve adhesion, surface preparation or moisture. Appearance alone cannot establish normal ageing or misuse. First send clear photographs of the whole product and affected area, together with the model, purchase date and use environment, to after-sales support for assessment.

Local touch-up, only after suitability is confirmed

Local repair may be suitable for a small area where the surrounding coating is firmly bonded and the substrate is intact. Ask after-sales support to confirm the materials and method before starting.

  1. Clean and dry thoroughly

Disconnect the fountain from the power supply and drain any water before treatment. Remove dirt and allow the repair area to dry fully. A clean, dry surface is essential before coating.

  2. Remove loose coating

Gently remove lifted or loose paint, smooth the edges and remove sanding dust. Do not paint over detached coating or sand so deeply that the fiberglass substrate is damaged. Use appropriate dust protection.

  3. Use compatible repair materials

Follow the confirmed repair plan. Use a primer and topcoat suitable for the fiberglass substrate and compatible with the original finish, where the plan requires them. Test a small hidden area first and follow the specified coat thickness and recoating intervals.

  4. Allow the specified cure before reuse

Follow the material instructions for drying and curing. After-sales support should confirm when the fountain can be refilled and restarted based on the coating requirements. A surface that feels dry is not, by itself, proof that it is ready for water.

Basins and water channels need specific confirmation

Before repairing a basin interior, water channel or other water-contact area, ask after-sales support to confirm that the materials suit the relevant water-contact or immersion conditions. Do not substitute unconfirmed ordinary decorative paint or clear protective coating.

When should you stop and contact support?

If extensive peeling, persistent blistering, repeated paint loss, cracking or leakage appears soon after first use, stop DIY repainting and contact after-sales support. Assessment is needed before deciding on repair or another solution; do not automatically treat this as ordinary surface ageing.
